Ernest Chausson — Le Colibri
The green hummingbird, the king of the hills,
Feeling the dew and seeing the bright sunlight
Shine into his nest of woven grass,
Takes flight like a newly-minted sunbeam.
He flies quickly to nearby streams,
Where bamboo canes rustle like waves on the sea,
And where the red ashoka with the heavenly fragrance
Opens to show its moist and glistening heart.
He lands on the golden flower,
And drinks so much love from the rosy cup
That he dies, without knowing if he could drink it dry!
On your pure lips, my beloved,
My heart too would have wished to die
From that first perfumed kiss.
