В первый день главный герой получает перепелку на груше. Второй день приносит вторую птицу — двух горлиц и перепелку. Третий день добавляет трех французских кур, двух горлиц и перепелку. Подарки продолжают накапливаться, и на каждый следующий день добавляется новый элемент, от птиц и колокольчиков до пляшущих девушек и барабанщиков. Песня повторяется весь текст вновь и вновь, добавляя при этом новые элементы каждый раз. Это песня о щедрости и ожидании праздника.
